When you decide to renovate it’s impossible to avoid confrontation with the storage/packing demons. Just uttering the words ‘organizing’ usually results in a chorus of groans but honestly the more effort you put into packing up your belongings means less stress after everything is done. Less post-renovation stress means more time enjoying your shiny new space right? Here are some tips that may help ease the process along.

First things first is getting down and dirty and going through all your things

  • You will obviously need to sort out the essentials and put those aside. You’ll survive without your precious lava lamp out on display but keep in mind that without careful planning there may be things you pack away which you might need later.  And you don’t want to have to constantly dig through your storage to get things out, or possibly have to buy duplicates of things.
  • Next tip is to purge. You’ve finally got the chance to go through all your stuff in one sitting, why not take this opportunity to toss out all the junk you’ve accumulated over the years? Make the hard decisions and get out some donation boxes- the more stuff you get rid of, the less you have to pack up and store away and deal with later.

So you’ve decided on the items you absolutely need to survive, and you’ve cut your overall collection in half (right?), it’s time to pack

  • Plastic storage tubs with wheels are ideal, especially if you don’t have a lot of faith in your choices and end up having to dig out that popcorn maker that you absolutely need.  Try to borrow as many recyclable cardboard boxes as you can because although standard packing boxes stack neatly you’ll have to purchase them and like plastic tubs, will end up with a collection of empty containers post-renovation.
  • When packing up your items do it in an orderly fashion, now is not the time to shove as much as you can randomly into one box. Sharpies are your best friends, write everything you can on the boxes; room, contents, dates, anything… you’ll thank yourself later.

Finding a place to put all the containers is key

  • Renting a storage unit is a common go-to action for people who are renovating. There are also companies that will take your boxes, transport them to their facilities, and keep them there until you need them again. If you can use your charm on your friends and family, try using them to temporarily store your haul.
  • If you want to keep your stuff on your property, sheds and garages are a great option but keep in mind the weather; (moisture and freeze) and rodents. Renovation companies can even seal up a room with plastic walls, flooring and zipper doors to make an in-house, dust free room.
  • Furniture that can’t be moved out can be moved into these sealed rooms, or protected with plastic sheets.
  • If you are storing your stuff in your home while renovating it’s a good thing to keep in mind that there will be a constant traffic of people going in and out of your house – even when you aren’t there, so it’s a good idea to put your valuables somewhere safe. This will just prevent many unwanted tensions and situations in the future.
  • ‘Less is more’ is probably sounding like an annoying echo right now, but out of sight out of mind really does apply in this situation. No one wants to have to work around a stockpile of boxes, so its always easier just to get it all completely out of the construction area.
