Design trends don’t suddenly change at the start of the year – instead it’s more of a gradual shift. Some of these designs started gaining popularity in 2021 but we can expect to see more of them in the coming year. Here’s some of the top kitchen design trends for 2023!
Kitchen Design Trends for 2023
What we’ll see in 2023 is a lot of revisits to traditional design, with a modern twist. Others trends are unique for the needs of life in 2023!
Navy Blue Cupboards
White, brown, black, grey, and various wood tones have all been popular in the past. Navy blue isn’t a new colour for cabinets, but it’s still riding the popularity that started last year. You often see them paired with butcher block countertops or light coloured quartz and marble.
Shaker Style Cabinets
Shaker style cabinets date back to 1774 and have truly never gone out of style. That being said, in 2023 you’ll see a lot more people come back to them, probably due to the popularity of farmhouse style décor and traditional design.
Multi-Purpose Zones
With so many people working from home now (which experts say is here to stay after the pandemic ends) homes need to adapt to our changing needs. For those without space for a dedicated home office, the kitchen has turned into a multi-functional space. It’s not just where you prepare meals or entertain, it’s now an office or classroom for many families.
This has sparked an “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em! approach to kitchen remodels. People are adding suitable storage to the kitchen to accommodate work materials and building dedicated work “zones” or “nooks” into the kitchen design. These are similar to the telephone table area that homes built in the 90s and early 00s had that include a lower chair-height countertop and open space underneath to sit.
Custom Appliances
Custom appliances are the new stainless steel. People are no longer choosing the shiniest option; with custom appliances you can pick something that matches your kitchen exactly. There’s so many variations on this, too. In the picture above, for example, you can see a retro-style fridge that completely changes the whole vibe of this kitchen. Alternatively, hidden appliances (especially fridges) blend in seamlessly with kitchen cabinets for a uniform look.
Samsung’s new line of custom fridges are a great example of what the brands are doing to meet this need, and we’ll likely see more styles pop up in the coming months and years.
Accent Islands
Two toned kitchens, especially with a different colour island, aren’t anything new. But we will see the design trend continue into 2023, including more fun accent colours for kitchen islands than ever before! People are no longer “playing it safe” with their kitchen cabinet colours.
Unique/Patterned Kitchen Tiles
The subway tile trend has paved the way for tiles becoming generally more popular in kitchens. What we’ll see in 2023 is more options for unique and patterned tiles rather than the plain subway or square glass tiles we’re used to seeing as backsplash.
